I would say it is more of a spacktivity. A cross between a sport and an activity. This is because in a sport you compete against one or serveral opponents, but it also normally includes physical activity. An activity is anything you do in your free time, regardless of how strenuous it is.
As far as it being an occupation, I would say that if you plan on having 25% of your yearly income from poker, then it is an occupation. If you are lucky enough to make a large amount of money playing poker, then it is a nice occupation to have.

I dont consider it much of a sport... If this is prompted because of ESPN coverage remember that ESPN stands for Entertainment Sports (?) Network... Entertainment comes first : )
If you consider chess or scrabble a sport, yes then it is a sport, but the only physical activity it takes is the endurance of sitting for so long... Something lots of people do every day. Not much of a sport to me, more of a competitve game.

Golf is basically a game against yourself more so than any other opponent. There is nothing you can do to make your opponent play worse, all you can do is play your best.
Golf is definetly not a game for the physically and mentally challenged, it is much more difficult than anyother popular sport I have played.
